The Chicago rapper sat down with The Breakfast Club to promote his new album, and talks about therapy, growth, and more.
On Feb 28. G Herbo dropped PTSD via Machine Entertainment/ Epic Records. The 14 tracks project features appearances from A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, BJ The Chicago Kid, Lil Durk, Chance the Rapper, Juice WRLD, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, Polo G, Jacquees, Sonta, and 2PRETTY.
PTSD is a reflection of Herbo’s reality growing up in the Southside of Chicago. The artwork by T.J. Spencer, shows Herbo holding up the American flag with several bullet holes, and replaces the fifty stars with portraits of friends he’s lost through his life. The stars represent “50 of not just people from Chicago, 50 of my close friends, 50 people that I grew up with, 50 of my friends fathers, 50 of my friends mothers, aunties, lil sisters, brothers, uncles… I wanted to bring people into my reality…Im 24 years old and I know more than 50 people dead,” he told The Breakfast Club.
G Herbo made sure it was known that he is committed to making his city a better place by contributing to the education system as well as starting his own mental health organization, and always giving back. He said, “when I’m in Chicago I go to the juvenile facilities and I go to high schools and I go to these…youth centers… to really give back to my people and let them see me… cause they need that.”
He then goes on to talk about being diagnosed with PTSD. In fact, he said it was all because of his lawyer that he gave therapy a chance. Admitting that initially he wasn’t interested in therapy and thought it wasn’t cool but knew that what he was experiencing wasn’t normal. He witnessed his first murder at 8 years old and got shot at 16 years old. “I never went to therapy after I seen my first murder. Kids go to therapy after they parents get divorced… I didn’t go talk to nobody after I got shot I came right back outside after I was shot with a gun on my waist,” he said.
The interview continues with Herbo talking about his addiction, being focused and believing in himself, Juice WRLD, and more.
