Spotify has taken a savvy step toward becoming more social—and keeping that social energy inside its walls. On August 26, 2025, the streaming giant began rolling out a brand-new in-app messaging feature (aptly named Messages) for mobile users in select markets—including both Free and Premium subscribers aged 16 and older.
Users can now share songs, playlists, podcasts, or audiobooks via the share icon in the Now Playing view—but instead of switching to another app, they can pick an existing connection to message directly within Spotify.

Messaging will only work with people you’ve already connected with—through Family or Duo plans, collaborative playlists, Jams, or Blends. The recipient must accept your message request before the conversation begins.
Spotify previously had a messaging feature but removed it in 2017 due to low usage. With 696 million monthly active users in Q2 2025, the company believes the timing is now right for a comeback. This aligns with its push to hit 1 billion users, expand video and podcast content, and enhance monetization opportunities
Spotify’s Messages feature is a thoughtful reintegration of direct messaging—more robust this time—with clear privacy controls, modern design, and social convenience. Whether it becomes a staple feature or a skippable extra may depend on how well it resonates with users moving forward.
