The cross-generational rap star was recognized at the Urban One Honors with the Music Innovation Honor. The award was presented by long time friend and collaborator Lil Kim.
This was a very special moment not only for Missy Elliott but for music, women in music, and the black community. She shared this moment by expressing her love for her “sisters” Lil Kim and Da Brat as well as her community. She spoke of the temptation to give up when her health took a turn for the worse. (Missy has battled Grave’s disease for many years.) “I was sick. I couldn’t even hold a pen to write and itt was so much to say give up, but as I stand here with all of you, I thank you because there is so much talent in this room. Your energy and everything about us — I want y’all to know that we are special. Black people, we are special, understand that.” Missy said through tears.
