DJ Premier sat down with The Breakfast Club to talk about Gang Starr’s new album, One Of The Best Yet. He details on the lengths it took to create the album, and his last moments with Guru. Some notable features include J. Cole, Royce Da 5’9”, Ne-Yo, Talib Kweli, M.O.P, and Q-Tip. Premier samples and scratches alongside Guru’s vocals and delivers, One Of The Best Yet.
DJ Premier got into detail on what it took to create the album, a lot of which involved a legal battle against Guru’s business partner. The legal battle began right after Guru’s death (9 years ago) and it took 7 years to negotiate a deal to get Guru’s vocals.
He talks about how J. Cole encouraged him to approach the marketing and planing of the singles differently. Suggesting him to releasing “Family and Loyalty” as the first single, rather than “Bad Name.” To which Premier admits was a smart move.
