Dave East stopped by the Liftoff show with the L.A. Leakers to promote his debut album Survival. He talks about everything from the Popeyes’ chicken sandwich to his friendship with Nipsey Hussle and working with Nas.
Straight off the bat Dave East made it clear that he wasn’t feeding into the hype of the Popeyes’ Chicken sandwich saying,“i’m good off them sandwiches.”
The Harlem-born rapper released his project Survival on November 8th. The first track on the album, “They Wanna Kill You” was produced by Swizz Beatz and scratched by DJ Premier, making it the first time the two collab. Dave names Premo as on of his favorite producers of all time and hints at a possible project between the two. When asked about his other favorite producers he names The Alchemist, Dame Grease, Angelettie, The Hitmen, Buda & Grandz, Wheezy, Murda Beats, and Mike & Keys.
Dave East went on to say his studio sessions are like “a Bob Marley session,” with a lot of weed, champaign, and good vibes. Dave says that he wanted to make music that everyone could relate to.
The conversation moved on to Nipsey Hussle, who was a good friend of East. Dave and Nip were working on music together and as far as releasing any music he says “ it’s not easy for me to revisit that just for some money.” He reminisced on conversations he had with the late rapper and says “he was a genuine dude beyond rap.”
Survival was executive produced by Nas. When asked about working with him East calls the experience “priceless” and adds “he’s dope. He let me do me.”
